Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ review: still (the) best

Succeeding the Galaxy Tab S7+, the S8+ model brings some notable improvements, without revolutionizing the tablet market.

In 2022, Samsung is renewing its high-end tablet, with the Galaxy Tab S8+. Direct follow-up to the S7+ released in 2020, the device offers a nice redesign without huge risk taking, halfway between the S8 and S8 Ultra iterations. After focusing its efforts on folding smartphones and its Fan Edition stamped products, has the Korean manufacturer won its bet? We do the test.

Design and Ergonomics

If the S8 + tablet is directly inspired by the S7 +, it also borrows its features. The device does not take any risks on its design, to the point that it is very difficult to differentiate the two models. Same dimensions, same coating and same magnetic stripe on the back… nothing really new on the horizon, except for the few grams that the tablet loses, and its slightly different color. With his 12.4-inch screen and 84% area coverage, the Galaxy Tab S8+ is once again playing in the big leagues. If Samsung has not seen fit to renew its design, it is probably because that of its predecessor was already working very well.

For its design as its screen, the S8 + plays elbows with its predecessor. With her dalle OLED 12.4 inches and its 120Hz maximum refresh ratethe display of the S8+ mimics that of the Galaxy Tab  S7+. On a daily basis, this translates into excellent brightness, controlled reflections, and display comfort that is very pleasing to the eye. All carried by infinite contrasts and an absence of afterglow that does not spoil anything. As always with OLED, we are rarely disappointed on this point.

If it does not differ much from the S7 +, the Galaxy Tab S8 + nevertheless benefits from an addition of size with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. For the moment rather reserved for smartphones, the very high-end chip is just beginning to arrive on the tablet market; it only made sense that Samsung’s latest premium iteration would qualify.

On a daily basis, however, we must be honest: the Galaxy Tab S8 + does not revolutionize the genre. Samsung’s old high-end tablet was already doing wonders, the 2022 batch is just a continuation of its continuity. Yes, the performance is excellent, the slowdowns non-existent and the user experience among the best on the market. But let’s face it, it doesn’t make a big difference with the previous model.

Finally on autonomy, the tablet is a continuation of its range. With a 10,090 mAh battery identical to the S7+, the S8+ offers an identical autonomy of more than 12 hours (up to 14 at 60 Hz), a very good score which will allow it to be used all day as a work tool. Especially since with its USB-C charging, and its compatibility 45W fast charging, the tablet fills up in just over an hour, aligning itself with most smartphones on the market. Be careful though, this year the power supply plays the absent. A question of ecology or economy for Samsung, you will have to go to the cash register or do your bottoms of drawers to recharge the device.

Photo: almost at the level of a smartphone

We will still note a nice improvement on the photo part. The devil is in the details, and it’s often on the shot that even high-end tablets struggle to convince. Comes with a 13 MP and 6 MP dual rear module, the Galaxy Tab S8+ takes very good shots via its main sensor. In night mode, the result is still not optimal, but in good light conditions, we feel that the Korean manufacturer has taken to heart to improve its game. In terms of colorimetry and exposure in particular, the rendering is revealed very satisfaying. A finding that is all the more obvious when comparing the tablet to the Lenovo P12 Pro released a few months ago.

On the ultra wide-angle, we still note a annoying tendency to distort photos on the periphery. Nothing very serious, especially since this is often the case with fisheye lenses. Finally, and this is probably the most important point, Samsung manages to master its front camera, with a 12 Mpx sensor designed for videoconferences. If it does not shine with the quality of its selfies, the device will be more than enough to keep a professional look in front of your colleagues. If neither the photo nor the video revolutionize the genre, it must be admitted that the Galaxy Tab 8+ is close to an entry-level smartphone in terms of quality, which is to its credit for a tablet.

Laptop or graphic tablet, all-in-one

Why choose between genders? Thanks to its accessories, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ has the luxury of being particularly versatile. In addition to being an excellent multimedia tablet for entertainment, video games or digital reading, the device also offers compatibility with the now famous S-Pen from Samsung. No more mystery, this is one of the brand’s key arguments. Large, manageable and comfortable to hold, the stylus works wonders for note taking and digital drawing. The palm-reject technology that differentiates the movements of the S Pen from the hand works frankly well, and avoids involuntary collisions.

Since the last updates, the firm has offered the S-Pen all its interest: not only is it now possible to write freehand in Google search fields for certain forms – which makes the use of the stylus very natural – but in addition, the device can now be used as a full-fledged graphics tablet, and even as a second screen when connected to a computer. The handling is very simple, and the rendering frankly satisfactory.

The icing on the cake, the Galaxy Tab S8+ also turns into a laptop. Compatible with Samsung’s Book Cover Keyboard Slim, the tablet becomes a real extra computer. Its large 12.4-inch screen and removable keyboard are a real asset in public transport or when traveling, to the point that you (almost) do not feel cramped when you work on it. A versatility pushed to the extreme, which manages not without difficulty to surpass the competition in the context of daily use.

Unsurprisingly, the software integration is also a success. The tablet offers a clear, intuitive and stable interface under Android 12, equipped with a light overcoat that knows how to remain discreet. Regulars of the Samsung suite should not be out of placewe also find the very practical Samsung Notes and Sketchbook, than the Game Launcher dedicated to video games. Even the unbearable voice assistant Bixby is in the game. Fortunately, he has the good taste to be discreet.

Price and availability

Made official during his Unpacked 2022, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ completes the range with a premium tablet, and this inevitably affects the price. Proposed from €999 in the Wi-Fi version and 128+8 GB of RAM, it goes up to 1219 € in its 5G configuration and 256+8 GB of RAM. A high price, but which is justified by its top-of-the-range performance and its extreme versatility.
