This is the fourth major evolution ofiOS 15introduced with theiPhone 13 last September. These updates, which began in December with iOS 15.1, added new features to Apple’s iPhone OS and improved existing ones. iOS 15.4 follows iOS 15.3.1, released last month to fix a security flaw in iPhones and iPads.
What is the release date of iOS 15.4?
iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 both rolled out on Monday, March 14. The new iPhone 13 Green, iPhone 13 Pro Alpine Green, and iPhone SE 2022 will ship with the latest version.
How to download iOS 15.4?
You will find iOS 15.4 by going to Settings > General > Software Update and selecting Download and install.
What is Universal Control?
Universal Control allows other devices to be used as a second screen, moving content seamlessly between them. This highly anticipated feature was originally announced for macOS Monterey, but was delayed into the fall, with a new timeline saying “this spring.” Universal Control appeared in the iOS 15.4 beta and will launch in public beta alongside the Monterey OS 12.3 and iPadOS 15.4 updates.
As Universal Control is still in beta, expect to run into some issues from time to time. And note that it does not work on all devices. Apple says Universal Control is available on:
- MacBook Pro (2016 and later)
- MacBook (2016 and later)
- MacBook Air (2018 and later)
- iMac (2017 and later)
- iMac (27-inch 5K Retina, Late 2015)
- iMac Pro Mac Mini (2018 and later)
- Mac Pro (2019)
- iPad Pro
- iPad Air (third generation and later)
- iPad (sixth generation and later)
- iPad Mini (fifth generation and later)
Apple tells us how to use Universal Control: “Both devices must be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication. For wireless use, both devices must have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff turned on and be within 10 meters apart. iPad and Mac must not share a cellular and Internet connection. For USB use, you must trust your Mac to the iPad.”
Can I use Face ID with a mask?
Apple has updated its Face ID technology so it can be used with a mask on iPhone 12 and newer, even while wearing a mask. This involves tapping a smaller portion of the face to verify identity, which will mean being more specific about the angle at which you’re holding the iPhone when using Face ID. The update should work for people who wear prescription glasses but not sunglasses.
What are the new emojis?
If you’re a fan of emojis, you’ll love iOS 15.4. The update includes 37 new ones, including emojis for pregnant people, hands forming a heart, a greeting and an emoji biting your lip.
Other iOS 15.4 Features
The operating system update also brings new security-focused updates. AirTagswhich came into the limelight after reports emerged of the devices being used to harass people.
The 15.4 update also changes the “call with five taps” emergency call shortcut from a default setting to an option, meaning the feature won’t be enabled unless you choose to. authorize it. The long press option for the side and volume buttons remains enabled by default.
SharePlay also got a few updates, allowing some apps to initiate SharePlay calls from within the app, rather than having to initiate a SharePlay call and then open the app. Developers will need to update their apps accordingly, so expect this option to roll out over time.
Another feature included in iOS 15.4 is the ability to copy text from objects using the camera in the Notes or Reminders apps. iOS 15.4 also fixes a bug related to Siri interaction recordings.
